It’s been awhile since my last frugal find. The reason being is once I find a product or service that I like, I tend to stick with it. Given that most of the running classes I coach are on the South Side of Dallas it can be difficult to get over to a running specialty store for last minute items. So I just love love love it when I find an effective and inexpensive dupe for something I usually drive across town for. Nine times out of ten you live closer to a drugstore than a running specialty store anyway.

There’s a wacky story behind this frugal find. It involves makeup, youtube tutorials, and sharing. So let’s jump right into it.

Monistat Chafing GelWhen I hear the word Monistat the first thing that pops in my head is anti-fungal cream for the lady parts. However, about a month ago I watched a makeup tutorial (yes cosmetics) where a lady raved about the Monistat Complete Care Chafing Relief Powder Gel being a close contender if not better than some high-end makeup primers. Since her skin type is similar to mine I drove to my closest Target and purchased a tube to try this stuff out. How about this $6 tube of stuff works better than a $20+ dollar container of high end primer!? FRIENDLY NOTE: THE MONISTAT CHAFING RELIEF GEL IS NOT THE SAME PRODUCT AS THEIR ANTI-FUNGAL CREAM FOR YEAST INFECTIONS. DON’T BE (INTENTIONAL IMPROPER GRAMMAR USAGE) I REPEAT DON’T BE SITTING UP THERE PUTTING ANTI-FUNGAL CREAM ON YOUR TOES TALKIN’ BOUT “COACH MOE SUGGESTED I DO THIS.” READ PLEASE.

body-glide-stickFast forward to the morning of the half marathon. I’m gathering all of my race day essentials. What made this time around different is I had to prep for myself and put together race day items for one of my students that I had to pick up at 6:30AM. Sharing the same tube of Body Glide would have been unsanitary because it’s designed like a deodorant stick. It would have been wrong to leave him hanging without any chafe protection and it was too last minute for me to mention to his mom to buy something. I immediately thought about the Monistat Complete Care Chafing Relief Powder Gel and applied some to my feet. When I picked up my student I didn’t even try to explain to him what Monistat was, how the company is mainly known for it’s anti-fungal cream for lady parts, or how the gel is different. He is a 16 year-old boy. He probably has not heard the word Monistat, yet. But I didn’t even take chances. I just said “Here, rub this on your toes, between your toes, and under your toes, it’ll keep them from chafing and blistering up.” I motioned how to apply it, he nodded and followed suit.

And just like that we went on to run our half marathon race blister and chafe free.

Body Glide (average cost): $9.99
Monistat Complete Care Chafing Relief Powder Gel: $5.98
